Now, we’re down to the tenth most romantic dessert there is for Valentine’s day. I know in most cases 10 means last but not in my list; I always save the best for last. The most romantic dessert on a day like Valentine’s day has to be sweet, light, easy to digest, appealing in look and taste, and it should definitely be a dessert that you won’t ever get tired of. Most importantly, it has to be created with love and with me completely in mind. When I bite into it, I shouldn’t be able to compare it to anything else.

Little is known about the true history of Valentine’s Day and how it originated. However, two legends have been passed down through the generations. One is a protestant version and the other is a catholic version, both very similar to one another. It is nearly impossible to know which one has the facts since there is not a lot of information available about its history.

During the third century, there were three different men known as Saint Valentine, all believed to have been executed on February 14th. The Saint Valentine who is associated with Valentine’s Day is believed to be a bishop living in the Roman Empire. The emperor at the time, Claudius II, put a ban on marriage so that soldiers would not be distracted by their wives and families. He wanted the soldiers to be completely concentrated on battle and protecting their land from invasion. The Roman Empire was getting too large to protect and many conflicts were occurring within the empire as well, so Claudius II needed as many soldiers as he could get.

Saint Valentine saw how unjust it was for the emperor to prohibit soldiers from getting married to the woman they love. Young couples feared that they would never be able to get married, so Valentine would secretly marry them. Word got around that he was performing these marriages and more and more people started coming to him to get married. Eventually, Claudius II found out about the wrong Valentine was doing and ordered for his arrest.

Since Valentine was believed to have special healing powers, his jailer approached him asking him to take away his daughter’s blindness. The catholic and the protestant version differ here in how Valentine was able to succeed in curing the girl’s blindness. Claudius II finally met Valentine, admitting that he was impressed by his bravery. However, Valentine tried to convert Claudius II away from the Roman gods, so he had Valentine executed.

Valentine had grown very close to his jailer’s daughter and she was upset to hear of his execution. Valentine asked his jailer for something to write with and wrote a message to the girl. At the end of the letter, it read “from Your Valentine”. Some believe that Valentine was actually in love with the girl, but historians concentrate on the concept of love relating to “Christian love” rather than “passionate love”. The little facts they have relate to religious traditions. This signature on the letter is what brought about the tradition of having a “valentine” during Valentine’s Day.

Young Romans began to carry on the tradition of giving messages of love to the women they felt affection for. By the fourteenth century, February 14th was officially associated with love. During the beginning of the Middle Ages, the church tried to get rid of this association, but the tradition continued to live on. This tradition spread to the Americas and in the 1840s, greeting cards began to be sent all over the country on what is now known as Valentine’s Day. Today, people give gifts, candies, chocolate, and jewelry on Valentine’s Day to express their love to their husband, wife, boyfriend, or girlfriend. Many even give gifts to friends and family.

Valentines Day, the season of love. Where do the decadent traditions stem from? And who really is the infamous Saint Valentine?

History tells us the origins for this holiday stem from both Christian and Roman traditions, but what does Saint Valentine really have to do with the season of affection? The Catholic Church has recognized three saints under the name Valentine, all of whom unfortunately were martyred.

Valentine’s Day Legends

One legend, speaks the dark solitary tale of a Priest named Valentine who served during the 3rd century in Rome. When Claudius the second decided that men without a wife or children to weigh them down made significantly better soldiers. The sinister ruler outlawed marriage to young men, brilliantly securing his crop of young soldiers. However Valentine realizing the injustice of this horrid law defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young couples in secret. When the actions of this disobedient rebellion were discovered, the priest was sentenced to death.

Another legend insinuates he was the first to send out a valentine, being a romantic inmate sending one to the love that the bars separated. The girl may have been the jailer’s daughter, who visited him during his incarceration. The letter went out before his untimely death, signing “From your Valentine.”

Although the stories are cryptic, the main points of the stories point out his appeal to romanticism; not surprising that he soon became the most famous Saint in Europe. Although we all celebrate this holiday in the middle of February, to remember his death which took place sometime around 270 AD, some believe February was chosen to Christianize the holiday in regards to the Pagan Lupercalia festival.

Why February you ask?

In ancient Rome it was the beginning of spring, believed to be a time of purification. Lupercalia in aims of the festival would gather in a cave and sacrifice a goat of dog for the intentional idea of purification. Then making strips from the animals, the rabid beasts would strike there woman believing to make them more fertile. Pope Gelasius declared February 14th valentines day in 498 AD, deeming the Pagan ways un-Christian. It was also commonly assumed that this day was birds mating season, further perpetuating the idea of it being the season of love.

The oldest known Valentine written was a poem by Charles, duke of New Orleans to his lovely wife. The piece of history was written while he was held captive in the Tower of London after being captured during the battle Agincourt. Years later it is believed King Henry V hired a writer to compose a Valentine note to Catherine of Valois.

According to the greeting card association an estimated 1 billion Valentines are sold annually, making it second to Christmas in card sales. Meaning like all great traditions it has been commercialized and used for mass production, which is standard. All we can hope is the traditions are kept alive, and the origins of this holiday are not forgotten.
